Your Ultimate Guide to Planning the Perfect Holiday Abroad

Planning a holiday abroad can be both thrilling and challenging. With countless destinations and activities to choose from, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to book the perfect getaway. Yet, with a bit of organisation and research, you can craft an enjoyable experience that suits you down to the ground.

Researching Things to Do

Before booking your flights, it's important to research the destination you have in mind, you don't want to book a holiday and then find out that there isn't anything you would like to do once you get there. Identify the must-see attractions that you will really want to go to, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, or the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Have a look to see if there are any special events taking place during your visit? Checking websites like TripAdvisor, local tourism boards, and travel blogs can offer valuable insights into activities and experiences available. If you go to Google search and type in Visit and then the destination you are going to, you will find the local tourism board websites. Google Maps is one app that I use a lot, I find the attractions I want to go to and then I can find hotels, restaurants, local transport, etc so that I can build my trip.

Always check for seasonal events or festivals that might enhance your visit and give you a true taste of the local culture. Even look for local markets so that you can get really involved with the locals.

Booking Flights

With a clear idea of what you want to do, it's time to book your flights. Utilise flight comparison websites like Skyscanner or Kayak to spot the best deals. Being flexible with your travel dates can lead to significant savings. For example, flying mid-week can often be 30-40% cheaper than weekend flights.

Keep an eye out for budget airlines but remember to factor in the total cost and not just the price you see on you first look at the flights. There could be potential baggage fees, seat reservation fees, insurance and even transfer costs. A lot of the time, booking in advance can give you better prices, but if you are flexible and willing to take a risk, you might score a last-minute deal that saves you some cash.

Finding Accommodation

Selecting the right place to stay is critical for a successful holiday. Consider your budget, distance to attractions, and the type of experience you want. For instance, a hotel may offer on-site dining and amenities, whereas a vacation rental might give you more space and kitchen facilities.

When I go onto Booking.com, it's usually for a hotel for a gig or a short break away, I have a few filters that I click on straight away, I pick Parking and Private Bathroom. I don't ask for much from a hotel but parking and my own bathroom is a must.

Sites like Booking.com and Airbnb, where you can compare options, read guest reviews, and check ratings are great for making sure that the super cheap hotel you just found isn't actually a bed-bug ridden hostel.

Make sure to look for amenities that are important for your stay, such as free Wi-Fi, breakfast, and how close it is to public transport. For example, a hotel in the heart of Rome might cost about £150 per night, but being among historic landmarks can save you commuting time and enhance your experience.

Local Events and Attractions

With flights and accommodation sorted, delve deeper into local events and attractions. Review community calendars, local newspapers, and social media groups for events during your stay that pique your interest. Attending festivals such as the Oktoberfest in Munich or Carnival in Rio can offer unique insights into the area's culture and lifestyle.

These local experiences, whether they are food festivals, art exhibitions, or live performances, can enrich your holiday and create unforgettable memories.

Transportation Options

Navigating your destination smoothly is vital for a hassle-free holiday. Research public transport options like buses, trains, and trams, or consider renting a car if you plan to see more remote areas.

Apps like Google Maps can guide you on public transport routes, while local taxi services apps like Uber are convenient for outings late at night. If you're visiting a city, walking or biking can be a rewarding way to soak up the atmosphere and discover hidden gems along the way.

Dining and Restaurants

Food is an essential part of any travel experience. Before you arrive, research local cuisine and popular restaurants. Platforms like Yelp and Google Reviews can guide you to highly-rated dining options.

Don't hesitate to ask locals for recommendations. They often know the best spots that may not even be included online. I've lost count of the times we have asked hotel staff for a suggestion and ended up finding the most amazing places. For instance, you might discover a cozy taco stand in Mexico City that serves delicious, authentic food for just a few dollars. Moreover, trying street food or visiting local markets can give you an authentic taste of the region.

Make reservations for popular restaurants as soon as you know you want to eat there to avoid disappointment when they turn out to be fully booked, particularly during peak seasons when demand is high.

Creating an Itinerary

With all your research complete, it's time to create a balanced itinerary. The way I do this is with a spreadsheet, I separate the page into squares for each day. Here's an example for you.

Prioritize your must-see attractions and events while allowing room for spontaneity. Structure your days to optimize time but don’t hesitate to stray from the plan if something unexpected catches your interest.

Also, remember to carve out downtime in your schedule. Relaxing is just as important as sightseeing; holidays should be fun, not exhausting.

Packing Essentials

Packing for a trip can feel overwhelming, but it’s crucial to ensure you have everything needed. Make a checklist tailored to your destination’s climate and activities.

Don’t forget travel documents, chargers, and any necessary medications. If you're traveling to a country with different customs, research specific items to bring or avoid. For instance, some countries may have restrictions on certain food items or require customs declarations.
